Psittacine and passerine birds
We will explore these topics over 7 modules:
MODULE 1: Identification and Husbandry
The objective of this module is to guide you in identification of the most common psittacine and passerine species seen in practice. Basic husbandry for the common species of birds seen will be discussed.
MODULE 2: Handling & Examination
The aim of this section is to provide the clinician with a general and systematic approach to handling and clinical examination of an avian patient.
MODULE 3: Diagnostics and Supportive Care
This section will focus on sample collection and clinical pathology. Diagnostics to include radiography, ultrasonography and endoscopy will be discussed. At the end of this module we will discuss stabilisation and supportive care of the avian patient.
MODULE 4: Anaesthesia and Surgery
Anaesthesia of our avian patients can prove challenging for the clinician. This module aims to discuss pre-anaesthetic evaluation and supportive care. Analgesia, anaesthesia and monitoring will bediscussed. Common surgical procedures performed in our avian patients will be discussed.
MODULE 5: Common issues and basic procedures
This module will cover other reasons why birds are seen (and not specific diseases) such as wing clipping, beak and nail burring, broken blood feathers, constricted leg rings, and then we will discuss common client concerns regarding their birds and in this section we will focus on behaviour.
MODULE 6: Common diseases: nutritional associated diseases and gastrointestinal diseases.
MODULE 7: Common diseases: reproductive diseases, respiratory diseases, skin complaints and toxicity.
Throughout the 3 weeks of the course, you will also be presented with several clinical cases to work through, that we invite you to analyse and discuss in the classroom forum.
Please use the forum as much as possible to discuss the course material and to ask questions. Answers to the clinical cases will be posted on the forum after first allowing a few days’ discussion for each case.
