Fundamentals of Fluids Modules:
Module 1: Applied physiology

- Osmolarity/ Osmolality (Effective, Calculated, Measured, Gap)

- Renal physiology (clearance, GFR, filtered load- touching on RAAS and its affect on acid base and electrolyte balance)
Module 2: Electrolytes
To include:
- Sodium
- Hypernatremia (Pure water deficit, hypotonic loss, impermeant solute gain)
- Hyponatremia (Looking at plasma osmolality)
- Potassium
- Hyperkalaemia
- Hypokalaemia
- Chloride
- In relation to acid-base balance
- Corrected chloride (Hypo & Hyper)
- Corrections and treatment
Module 3: Acid-Base
To include:
- Concept of pH
- Buffering systems and body buffers
- Henderson-Hasselbalch equation
- Primary, simple and mixed based disorders
- Compensatory responses
Module 4: Shock & Dehydration
To include:
- Types of shock (hypovolaemic, cardiogenic, distributive, obstructive)
- Fluid correction techniques in shock
- Dehydration (differentiating between shock and dehydration, assessment and calculation)
Module 5 & 6: Fluid Therapy
To include:
- Routes
- Types
- Rates (Normal BER, Geriatric, Paediatric, Anaesthetic)
- Assessment (BP, CVP, PCV/TS, Urine production)
- Complications
- Considerations for common disease processes
- Diabetes (DKA, DI)
- GI/ Pancreatitis
- Anaemia (IMHA, Clotting disorders)
- Renal
