Module 1: Applied physiology

  • Renal physiology (clearance, GFR, filtered load- touching on RAAS and its affect on acid base and electrolyte balance)

Module 2: Electrolytes

  • Sodium
    • Hypernatremia (Pure water deficit, hypotonic loss, impermeant solute gain)
    • Hyponatremia (Looking at plasma osmolality)
  • Potassium
    • Hyperkalaemia
    • Hypokalaemia
  • Chloride
    • In relation to acid-base balance
    • Corrected chloride (Hypo & Hyper)
  • Corrections and treatment

Module 3: Acid-Base

To include:

  • Concept of pH
  • Buffering systems and body buffers
  • Henderson-Hasselbalch equation
  • Primary, simple and mixed based disorders
  • Compensatory responses

Module 4: Shock & Dehydration

To include:

  • Types of shock (hypovolaemic, cardiogenic, distributive, obstructive)
  • Fluid correction techniques in shock
  • Dehydration (differentiating between shock and dehydration, assessment and calculation)

Module 5 & 6: Fluid Therapy

To include:

  • Routes
  • Types
  • Rates (Normal BER, Geriatric, Paediatric, Anaesthetic)
  • Assessment (BP, CVP, PCV/TS, Urine production)
  • Complications
  • Considerations for common disease processes
    • Diabetes (DKA, DI)
    • GI/ Pancreatitis
    • Anaemia (IMHA, Clotting disorders)
    • Renal
    • Addison’s
