Common conditions of guinea pigs

Common conditions of guinea pigs

Guinea pigs are rodents belonging to the suborder Hystrycomorpha and are amongst the most popular pet kept in the UK. Inappropriate diet and husbandry are often responsible for many of the common disorders seen in pet guinea pigs. Dental disease, skin disorders and reproductive or respiratory tract disease are among the most common conditions reported in the literature. Being prey species, guinea pigs tend to mask symptoms till the disease state is advanced. Therefore, any change in behaviour, urination, defecation or appetite should be immediately noticed to enable identifying health problems at an early stage and allow a rapid, targeted and more efficacious treatment.
