Through the advent of novel technologies, our understanding of the diversity and balance of the microbiome is improving. Studies have tried to link features of the microbiome to specific states of disease. This has led to an increased interest in theraeputic strategies to manipulate the microbiome to the benefit of the host. This article will evaluate the current knowledge of the faecal microbiome and the evidence for probiotics, prebiotics and faecal microbiota transplantation.
