Feline coronavirus and feline infectious peritonitis in the Covid-19 era

In most cats, infection with feline coronavirus is subclinical; however, it can lead to feline infectious peritonitis, a common infectious cause of mortality, in a small minority. Vasculitis and pyogranulomatous inflammation results in a varied presentation, with effusions, mass lesions and pyrexia common. Blood analysis often reveals a mild anaemia, hyperglobulinaemia and mild icterus.

Although often strongly suspected, definitive diagnosis is complicated by the need to associate presence of inflammation with the virus. Currently treatment options are limited and there is no vaccine; however, recent advances in the treatment of COVID-19 in people is likely to pave the way for the successful treatment of cats.
